چکیده

The Early Jurassic was marked by a progressive recovery from the end-Triassic mass extinction and punctuated by recurring episodes of anoxia. These changes, associated with fluctuations in carbon isotope composition of marine carbonates, remain incompletely understood. Here we present a highresolution carbon and oxygen isotope record for the Early Jurassic based on well-preserved marine mollusks (belemnites) from Dorset, UK. Our new data show a number of dC excursions, starting with a negative excursion at the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary Event followed by lesser negative excursions showing in the Polymorphous, Jamesoni, and Masseanum-Valdani Subzones. The recognition of the SinemurianPliensbachian boundary Event in this study and elsewhere suggests that observed carbon-isotope trends are likely to represent a supraregional perturbation of the carbon cycle. A prominent positive carbonisotope event is also seen within the Pliensbachian Ibex Zone. This event is also clearly evident in the data from belemnites from Spain. This carbon-isotope excursion is not, however, coincident with inferred peak temperatures. The oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca data allow the determination of a number of pronounced Pliensbachian cool events. From the low point in the Brevispina Subzone, oxygen isotopes become more negative coupled with an increase in Mg/Ca values culminating in an Early Pliensbachian thermal maximum during the Davoei Zone. Taken with existing data, it appears that the Pliensbachian is characterized by two major warmings, first within the Davoei Zone followed by warming beginning in the latest Pliensbachian and peaking in the Early Toarcian.

The Early Evolutionary History of Belemnites: New Data from Japan

Belemnites (Order Belemnitida), a very successful group of Mesozoic coleoid cephalopods, dominated the world's oceans throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous. According to the current view, the phylogenetically earliest belemnites are known from the lowermost Jurassic (Hettangian, 201-199 Ma) of northern Europe. They are of low diversity and have small sized rostra without clear grooves. Their d...

REE patterns of microbial carbonate and cements from Sinemurian (

Marine microbialites serve as robust seawater rare earth element and yttrium (REE+Y) proxies through many intervals of Earth history, but questions remain about the partitioning of REEs into different coeval carbonate phases, potential syn-depositional contaminants and elemental redistribution during diagenesis. Microbial carbonates, cements and background sediments were analysed for stable iso...

Deep-Time Phylogenetic Clustering of Extinctions in an Evolutionarily Dynamic Clade (Early Jurassic Ammonites)

Conservation biologists and palaeontologists are increasingly investigating the phylogenetic distribution of extinctions and its evolutionary consequences. However, the dearth of palaeontological studies on that subject and the lack of methodological consensus hamper our understanding of that major evolutionary phenomenon. Here we address this issue by (i) reviewing the approaches used to quant...

Seawater Strontium Isotopes, Oceanic Anoxic Events, and Seafloor Hydrothermal Activity in the Jurassic and Cretaceous

There were three negative seawater strontium-isotope excursions (shifts to lower Sr/Sr values) during the Jurassic and Cretaceous that were of relatively short duration (5-13 my) and showed a relatively quick recovery to pre-excursion Sr/Sr ratios. These excursions occurred in the Pliensbachian-Toarcian (Early Jurassic), Aptian-Albian, and Cenomanian-Santonian (Early and Late Cretaceous respect...

New and poorly known Middle Jurassic larger benthic foraminifera from the Karst Dinarides of Croatia

Some new and poorly known larger benthic foraminifera are described from Middle Jurassic (Upper Aalenian–Bajocian) shallow-water limestones of the Croatian Karst Dinarides. Cymbriaella lorigae FUGAGNOLI is reported for the fi rst time outside its type-locality, the Upper Pliensbachian of the Southern Alps. New taxa described include Bosniella bassoulleti n. sp. and Dubrovnikella septfontainei n...
